After Gianmarco Tamberi and Femke Bol, the third name comes to the 61st Golden Spike Ostrava on Tuesday, May 31, with the specific goal of changing the historical records of the event. It is only 18-year-old Christine Mbom from Namibia, who last year won silver at the Tokyo Olympics and gold at the 200m World Junior Championships. She pushed the African record and at the same time the junior world record to 21.78, when she won the DL final in Zurich. The goal is to attack the second oldest record of Golden Spike, 22.07 Jarmila Kratochvílová from 1981. She will be assisted only by a little older, but also 19-years-old junior Beatrice Masilingi from Namibia with a maximum of 22.18. She was sixth at the Olympics and won silver behind her compatriot at the World Junior Championships.

For the 60th Ostrava Golden Spike meet (WACT Gold) on May 19, 10% of spectators capacity was approved. That means apart of worldwide television users, some 1500 spectators will be able to follow the meet in-person. The latest announcement confirms top triple jump duel of meet record holder legendary Christian Taylor in triple jump against World indoor record holder Fabrice Zango Hugues who just last weekend achieved 17.40  World lead. In men´s shot put local star and fresh European indoor champion from March Tomas Stanek will face the other two competitors from Torun podium, Poland´s Michal Haratyk and Croatian Filip Mihaljevic.

Mondo Duplantis to debut in Czech Republic

The jubilee 60th Ostrava Golden Spike on May 19 will offer the best that is currently in world athletics, the flying Armand Mondo Duplantis, world recorder inside and outside. He will have its premiere in the Czech Republic. He was named World Athlete of the Year by the International Federation last year. If the conditions are right, we could see the first six-meter jump in the history of the meeting.

Two World champions from Doha also confirmed their participation. In men´s pole vault Sam Kendricks who is also the meet record holder with 593 in 2019. Doha gold medalist in the 1500 m Timothy Cheruiyot is entered in the 800 m. Here the meet record is 1:43.24 by Wilfried Bungei from 2003. His best is 1:43.11 from 2019.

Hammer legend Anita Wlodarczyk is also confirmed on her come back path after knee surgery.

From Czech stars confirmed are Pavel Maslak for 400 m, Jakub Holuša and Filip Sasinek in the 1500 m, Radek Juška in long jump and Simona Vrzalova in the 1500 m who is from local SSK Vitkovice club.

The meet recieved the exemption from ministry of health to stage the meet in current situation. Discussions about possible spectators are still beeing held.

More top names are planned to be announced at a press conference on May 6 in Ostrava Stadium.

Vetter for Ostrava

After throwing a world lead of 91.50m in Offenburg on Saturday, Johannes Vetter confirmed his participation at the 60th Ostrava Golden Spike Meeting on May 19. It is special possibility to try for good mark before the eyes of the meeting director and World record holder Jan Zelezny. "I have seldom felt as good after a competition as I did this time. That means the body has adapted well to the stresses and strains of training," he said after the competition. Vetter looks ahead of Ostrava: "Im very much looking forward to Ostrava and meet Zelezny again," said Vetter. Before he will still  compete in Split early May at European Throwing Cup. He competed so far once at Golden Spike, was second back in 2017 with 87.88.

World Athletics inaugurated its Continental Tour in 2020, a series designed to showcase the world's best one-day meetings outside the Diamond League. While its roll-out wasn't quite as envisioned when it was announced last November, the series nonetheless illustrated how the sport, its organisers and athletes managed to adapt to and overcome the tremendous challenges, road blocks and disruptions that the global Covid-19 pandemic threw in its path.

Ostrava Golden Spike meeting director and javelin World record holder Jan Zelezny in relation to WACT Gold calendar 2021 publication said: "Im really looking forward to jubilee 60thn edition of Golden Spike, it will be on May 19 the first bigger meet in Europe in the summer season 2021. We are happy and proud to be part of WA Continental Tour Gold series also next year. Our event will be prepared as one of the top possibilities to achieve Olympic standards or valuable World Ranking points for Czech elite and all other international athletes. This year despite the difficulties we were able to stage one of the best meetings on the circuit and ended in top 3 in the scoring. Im sure that despite the early date top athletes will be already in shape specially due to the Olympic qualification. So Im not worried about the possible quality. But of course we only can hope that also the situation with pandemic and restrictions will be in decline by May next year."
